CALED is the Latin American and Caribbean Institute for Quality in Distance Higher Education, which provides advisory assistance, mainly in self-evaluation, for programs requiring this process. As background, we can describe the virtual-center project to develop standards for quality in Latin America and the Caribbean and its evolution starting by defining a model to evaluate quality, which has been applied with certain variants in different universities’ distance education programs and has made it possible to create a data base to compare standards and analyze their rational for organizing in different ways. Consequently, a Congress on Quality and International Accreditation in Distance Higher Education was held in October 2005 at the Private Technical University of Loja (Ecuador), awakening the interest of a large number of institutions, who resolved to create the Latin American and Caribbean Institute for Quality in Distance Higher Education (CALED).
